Snowplow Game

December 12, 1982
Schaefer Stadium, Foxboro, Mass
New England (3) over Miami (0)

A snowstorm kept this AFC East tilt scoreless until the 4:45 to go in the fourth quarter when snowplow operator, Mark Henderson, 24, on leave from the Norfolk State Prison on a work-release program, cleared a path on the 23 yardline for Patriot kicker John Smith. Later in the game, Miami got within field goal range, but squandered the opportunity to try a kick when David Woodley's pass was intercepted by Don Blackmon.

Two previous field goal attempts in the snow had been blocked, including at earlier 18 yard attempt by Smith. Commenting on the winning kick, Smith claimed the sweeper had actually pushed loose snow over the spot that he and Patriot holder, Matt Cavanaugh, had already cleared for the kick.

Trivia: The snowplow was actually a rotating sweeper mounted on a John Deere 314 tractor.
